Animal Abuse as an Indicator and Predictor of Abuse of Vulnerable Populations

Speaker: Phil Arkow

Compelling links connect animal cruelty and neglect as a potential indicator and predictor of domestic violence, child abuse, child sexual abuse, and elder abuse. Recognizing this “cruelty connection,” professionals in multiple disciplines are advancing innovative public policy reforms, implementing programmatic improvements, and conducting research to better understand the dynamics and interrelationships of all forms of family violence. This workshop will explore “The Link” between animal abuse and human violence and its implications for human services, veterinary and human medicine, law enforcement, and family welfare agencies.
