Exposure to intense stress and the suffering of others is a known risk factor for the development physical and mental disease. Yet, in order to help those we serve, many of us routinely put ourselves in harm’s way. In recent years, research has begun to identify the factors that enable individuals to not only increase their resilience, but to actually flourish under highly challenging conditions. This talk will briefly review examples from this body of research, and will touch on several practical strategies to increase resilience and support flourishing.
